Halloween Show: Ghostbusters

GhostbstersViggoHypnosis

Ghostbusters closed out the night.  The band was comprised of Matthew Maxwell, Jay Baker, Alec Roberts, Amanda Cook, Gabe Nokes, Dylan Barnes, and Mike R Mike.  With special appearances by Karlos Ayala, Joel Goulet, Madeline Maxwell Sabatoni and Natalie Head.

Why did you choose Ghostbusters?

Alec: Matt Maxwell’s enthusiasm.

Gabe: Ghostbusters chose me. Matt asked me and I couldn’t say no.

Amanda: I think Ghostbusters chose me.

Dylan: I think it was Matt who asked me to play keyboards for it. Once I found out I could be Slimer, I was pretty stoked.

Matt: I couldn’t help it. It just popped in there. I tried to think of the most harmless thing. Something that I loved from my child hood. Something that could never ever possibly destroy us.

Describe the Halloween show in 3 words

AR: Whoya Gonna Call?

MM: Superbowl Halftime Show

What’s your favorite song from the soundtrack?

AR: Bobby Brown – On Our Own

GN: That Bobbi Brown one. Embarrassing but a pretty slick tune.

AC: After that night I night I kind of never want to think about those songs again. They haunt me just like those ghosts they are busting.

DB: Higher. It’s a great closer.

MM: Magic by Mick Smiley.  However Joel rapping the Bobby Brown song was the best part of the performance.

Was there a song you wished you could have played but you didn’t?

AR: I wish people would have wanted us to play Higher and Higher longer.

GN: I wanted Slimer to play “cleaning up the town” while we were setting up.

AC: I think we played plenty. Take a look at that last song. Can you image us playing for longer?

DB: No, I think everything that should have been done was done.

MM: Cleaning Up The Town as performed by the Bus Boys.

What other soundtrack that didn’t get picked would you have wanted to do?

MM: Mannequin.  Vince as Hollywood.

How did you all come together for this band?

AR: Matt scouted people like Clint Eastwood in the new film Trouble with the Curve co-starring Amy Adams in theaters today!

GN: Matt and Jay really wanted to do it and they convinced everyone else. Matt, I think assumed Amanda wanted to do it. I don’t know if she was ever asked.

DB: Matt had been talking about the Ghostbusters Half Time show for some time. I think it came from that.

MM: Jay called this band immediately.  I forced my way in with all these big ideas of casting people. I wrote it all in a notebook of who I wanted to be who. I think I may have been going a little crazy with wanting very specific people to be in the band.  For instance, Mike R. Mike had to be  Peter Venkman and Gabe had to be Gozer the Gozerian. Jay seemed down for everything although I think I may have been going a little crazy. I pretty much begged a lot of people because they felt unsure if they wanted to use up their second band they were allowed to be in. Especially Alec who felt as if he was breaking the rules too much by being in three bands already. I just peer pressured the fuck out of him and he finally agreed. I peer pressured Gabe and Amanda as well. Come to think of it… I think I bullied everyone into the band.

How often did you practice?

AR: Twice. Not enough.

GN: Twice half band. Once full band. Once just me and Matt.

DB: I practiced with Matt and Alec a few times, I think. But I only practiced with the whole band and Viggo once.

MM: Just enough to make our neighbors really wonder what the fuck was going on.  Pink Floyd?  Whitney Houston? Ghostbusters?  What’s that cat’s name?

How did it feel to close out the night?

AR: I wish we could have practiced more. Ghostbusters was the obvious closer, and we pulled it off, but it would have been nice to be more comfortable.

GN: It was cool, but it’s really hard to perform well when you’ve been drinking all night and probably blew your voice out in the first two seconds of your other band. I thought we did really well. Until I saw myself on video

AC: It was pretty hard for me to sing that last song. After the first two bands I played in I had completely lost my voice. I just pushed every ounce of strength left to sing one more time.   You can probably hear me me giving up as the song went on and on and then jumping back in reluctantly. My upper range was totally shot and I was bummed that I couldn’t hit that high note in the chorus. It was fun but also torture.

DB: I practiced with Matt and Alec a few times, I think. But I only practiced with the whole band and Viggo once.

MM: I didn’t like it until the third fake stop in “Higher and Higher”. Then I loved it. I really wanted us to be right in the middle as some sort of Half Time Show.   Especially after we didn’t really get to practice that much. It turned out fine though. The last band is meant to be wasted and I’m glad that everything kind of turned to chaos with us playing “Higher and Higher” forever. I wish we would have broken into “Smells Like Teen Spirit” though.
